On Tuesday, August 29, 2023, the Saint Joseph Girls Soccer team went head to head with the Elkhart High School Lions. After a tough start to the season, a 7-0 victory is exactly what the girls needed. They began their season with a multitude of adversities, including not being able to steal a win in the first couple of games. However, this win against Elkhart is their ticket to motivation as they continue their rigorous schedule.
The game started off strong, with possession in the Elkhart defensive half for an extended period of time. In the 8th minute of playing, Zeta Nunemaker was able to tap in a goal, assisted by Meg Baxter. After this first goal, the rest began to fall in. Eliana Lang went on a shooting streak, scoring a hat trick after Nunemaker’s goal. Lang first scored after a beautiful pass from Maura Green. Then Lang’s second goal was set up by Greta Chadwell, and finally, Meg Baxter set up Lang for her last goal of the night. After Lang’s hat trick, Zeta Nunemaker was able to execute one more opportunity, Greta Chadwell set Nunemaker up for her second goal. The night ended with Baxter putting away two goals, both assisted by Anna Kate Mereness.
The defensive players also deserve a shoutout, as they got their first shutout of the season. Shea Anderson and Alex Choinacky shared the goal for the shutout, with a strong defensive line led by Lainey Eder and Paige Goben.
This win was an all-around team effort and shows how well this team can execute their abilities. The team will become unstoppable, and this Elkhart win is the beginning of their success. They play again on Thursday, August 31, against Chesterton, and continue their conference play next week against Adams. Stay tuned to see how the Girl’s Soccer team progresses throughout the season!
