On Tuesday a group of students went to Healthwin Specialized Care to help with the residents there.
Once we all got there, the group was split into two. One group, the students who had previously volunteered there, signed in then immediately started helping with anything they could. During this time, the students went room to room asking residents if they wanted to go for a walk, go to eat lunch, or to simply just go down into the lounge area. The other group, first time volunteer students, went through the orientation process. At this time we were going over rules and guidelines for taking care of the residents, what we are and are not allowed to do, signed some necessary papers, then took a tour of the facility.
Afterwards, both groups met back up and had lunch in the dining hall. There, we had a chance to interact and get to know other students that we didn’t know before. Once we were all done with lunch an employee came and gathered us to ask residents if they wanted to participate in an experiment, as it was experiment night for them. We only got a handful of residents to do the experiment, as some of them had just come back from lunch so they chose to relax in their rooms. For experiment night, we all went to the lounge area and went through the instructions, some of us even did the experiment for the resident we were assisting. At this time we all got a chance to get to know some of the residents, hear some stories they wanted to share and overall just had good conversation with them. Then that was the end of the trip, we took the residents back to their rooms, said goodbye, then left and came back to school. Overall it was a very enlightening experience and it was very wholesome. If you need some service hours and are not sure what to do for them, I strongly encourage you to speak with Deacon Oross to go through the process of becoming a volunteer for the Healthwin Specialized Care facility.
