It’s Hispanic Heritage Month! In honor of this special time, here’s a little background on the month itself and how our Spanish Club commemorates it.
Hispanic Heritage Month begins on September 15 and ends on October 15. This idea began as just a week in 1968, but changed to a month by President Ronald Reagan in 1988. September 15 is actually the day Costa Rica, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras and Nicaragua celebrates their independence. And not even a day later Mexico celebrates its independence on the 16th. This month is usually celebrated with all kinds of events and festivals.
Led by Mr. Rios, Spanish Club definitely does a great job of appreciating and celebrating the culture, and it’s lots of fun! They often just relax and enjoy some soccer games, or view the occasional movie, and talk about common interests. Spanish Club isn’t like any other club though, it’s more of a way to hang out with some friends after school and just enjoy games, activities and lots of tasty Mexican snacks. The meetings are officially set to Wednesday, but here and there they have some last minute meets, as they have club leaders that are usually seniors and juniors and they’re able to call meetings whenever they want.
Onto all the fun activities they do! Since 2020 they’ve been having some friendly competitions against the other language clubs, German and French. They’ve even had some breakfasts together in the past, how nice is that! In the past years they’ve done a scavenger hunt and a soccer game. In the future they plan on doing all different kinds of activities, and most of them are just last minute decisions, but that doesn’t mean they’re any less fun. Some activities they plan on doing are a t-shirt contest, taking a little field trip to Paleteria y Neveria La Rosita on Western Avenue, and even learn how to dance in Mexican styles. The great thing about most of these activities is that they’re based off of the students’ likes. They also occasionally do service hours. From one of their own members, Aaron Flores, Spanish Club is lots of fun and very recommended for any and all students.
