Do you love reading books? Are you someone that likes books that are dark, emotional, or have a beautiful/deep meaning? You might not even be a book lover but once you start reading this book, you will not be able to put down Girl in Pieces.
A young adult book written by Kathleen Glasgow Girl in Pieces features a plot that could be triggering for some due to its emotional content. Nicola Yoon, the author of Everything, Everything, praises this novel as a “haunting, beautiful, and necessary book that will stay with you long after you’ve read the last page.” The reason why it’s “haunting and beautiful” is because it contains things such as self harm, harassment, abandonment, sexual assault, etc. Because of these issues, you may face intense emotions.
In this novel, the main character, Charlotte (Charlie) Davis, is a seventeen-year-old that has lost more than most people do in a lifetime. She has an abusive mother, dead father, and her best friend, Ellis, who is gone forever. As a result for that, she believes she has no reason to live. This leads her to self harm herself whenever she feels like she’s not enough. Due to this, she was put in a treatment center where she spent her time there along with other young girls who also hurt themselves.
After being released from the treatment center, Charlie starts her own journey. She took a bus and went to Tucson to be closer with Mikey, a boy she likes but doesn’t like her (actually he likes Ellis instead). From there, Charlie’s steps didn’t go as planned. At times this book isn’t an easy one to read but is compelling and rewarding – especially if you enjoy books about serious issues or if you are currently going through a tough time. Overall Girl in Pieces reveals how one can heal, accept, and move on.
