The Atlas Six by Olivie Blake was published in 2022 and is a novel based on a world similar to ours, with one exception – magic exists.
This isn’t your classic Harry Potter kind of magic, though. The magic of this world is much more individualized, and has a more serious note to it. Not everyone in this world is a magician, but those who are have a power that they can decide whether or not to share.
The title characters of the story The Atlas Six have been brought together by a secret society of magicians called the Alexandrian Society. Each of the six main characters receives an invitation to join this highly prestigious society, but in the end, only five of them can be admitted. This novel follows the activities of the Atlas Six as they work together and build into a team during their time at the Alexandrian Society.
I would highly recommend this novel for many reasons, but especially because the story is so captivating. There are many plot twists throughout, and the way magic works in this world is really interesting. Each character has a different power, as well as a different relationship with their power. Some of them love their magic and flaunt it, others are annoyed by it and try to ignore it, and still others hide the truth of their power.
The author’s choice of switching the point of view of each chapter was one that I really liked because it allows the reader to see inside the head of each of the characters. It limits the knowledge of the reader to whatever the current character knows about the situation. Having multiple perspectives in the story is something that always intrigues me because it makes the story feel more real and it compels me to want to know what will happen next.
The Atlas Six is a long book, but it will keep you on your toes with the switching perspectives as well as on the edge of your seat with the ups, downs, and twists of the plot. It’s not too heavy on the fantasy side of things, even though magic is a central part of the story, so I think a lot of people would enjoy it. This is not a book I think someone would regret reading, so grab a copy and get reading.
