The Saint Joseph High School Theater Department has a variety of different opportunities for everyone and anyone to participate. In any play or musical, there are two separate paths you could take to find the perfect role for yourself. First, you could be an asset to the cast, including named characters, or for the musical, dancers, and the ensemble. Alternatively, you could be in the crew, being run crew, set designer, props master, stage manager, assistant manager, set foreman, choreographer, lights, sound, or hair and makeup.
In the cast, there are always named characters. For the fall play, there are only characters, meaning they have lines, but no singing or dancing. While some characters are more impactful than others, all characters are necessary to make the play happen! Dancers, both regular and featured and the ensemble are both influential aspects of the musical. While there are still named characters in the musical, there are also people who specialize in singing and dancing – dancers and the ensemble. If you love to act and get in front of the crowd, being a named character is for you! If you like to sing, and dance, along with acting, but would prefer not a large speaking role, being in the ensemble, or being a dancer is for you!
If being in front of a crowd is scary, and something you strongly have no interest in, there are still opportunities for you to be in the crew! The crew is anyone and everyone who puts on the magic behind the curtain. Being the people that help set the stage, and make sure that the plays and musicals run smoothly, the crew is highly helpful and necessary. As stated before, the crew has multiple roles, including run crew, set design, props master, stage manager, assistant manager, set foreman, choreographer, lights, sound, or hair and makeup. These roles are just as important as the characters, dancers, and ensemble members!
