Mascots are one of the most important aspects in a high school environment. They shape the school into who they are, and they most likely have an important reason as to why they have chosen that particular mascot.
Sports have a huge significance when discussing mascots because there are chants, uniforms, quotes, and many other things that are used at each sports game that revolve around a singular mascot. An example of this is during sports games, you hear announcers announce each school by their school name, and then their mascot. At Saint Joe, we were formally known as the Saint Joe Indians. But now there has been a decision to change our mascot. Since this decision was made we have not had the ability to be announced with a mascot that follows the Saint Joe name. Mascots have the power to bring unity and individual identity to high schools. Knowing this, many people believe it is imperative that we find a new mascot that fits the beliefs of Saint Joe High School in a better fitting way.
I have talked with various students, and have encountered many different views on this decision. Many feel as though we don’t have the same school spirit anymore because we don’t have the ability to say that Saint Joe has a mascot.
Principal Kennedy and the Saint Joe Community have been working hard to seek out a new mascot. They have been working closely and diligently in order to find a perfect mascot that fits Saint Joe. It’s a long process but in the end it will benefit the school and student body in ways that are hard to express.
This month the process will hit full stride as surveys have been taken, classes are planning to discuss ideas, and the committee is meeting to finalize the steps to determine a new mascot.
