With the play coming up there are lots of drama people trying to get people to watch it. It’s almost impossible to get through a year without people telling you to watch the play, and there are a lot of drama people who seem very emphatic about being watched. However, they are BIASED!
I, on the other hand, have never been in a play, so I’m both unbiased and barely informed. That’s why I’ll be reviewing every play I’ve seen (two) to figure out whether it’s actually worth seeing the new one.
30 Reasons Not To Be in a Play was (unsurprisingly) barely even a play. It was more of a stand up comedy routine with like 40 people in it. It started with the amusing premise: the play was instead an intervention compelling people to avoid being in plays.
Then there were some good jokes and running gags that came from the premise. I sort of expected the show to be unapproachable, like a play for play people, but it turned out really well and I don’t think there were any jokes that went over my head. It was extremely chaotic but it did come together.
I was also impressed by the acting. There were some particularly hard to pull off parts that I think were executed pretty well. Specifically, the monologues directed at the audience somehow managed to feel natural, in character, and amusing for their disruption of the main narrative. I highly recommend 30 Reasons. Too bad you can’t travel back in time and watch it.
