Everyone likes watching movies, right? What about making them? Well at Saint Joe’s Film Club they do both! Film Club is an extracurricular in which members watch movies and discuss them, create scripts and movies from said scripts.
This club is headed by Mr. DePauw, our English department head, teacher of AP English Language, Student Media, and Redemption courses, and Head Girls Soccer Coach. Meetings are held in Mr. DePauw’s room, room 140, in the English Hallway. They happen once to twice a month after school on Thursdays.
These Thursday meetings have been occurring for a long while, as the club dates back to the early 2000s.Ealrier this fall, the club had a screening of The Martian which was well attended and a crowd pleaser. From its conception the club has also hosted the annual Saint Joe Film Festival.
The festival is held every year in May and is a wonderful event where students display the projects they have been working on to an audience. Unfortunately, the last Film Festival was held in 2021 where the club went through the best films up until 2021. The event was canceled in 2022 and 2023 due to the disruption of COVID which impacted the ability to film together..
Nevertheless, the future looks bright as Mr. DePauw looks to host the event this year. During a recent meeting on Thursday, November 9, members met after school to discuss the script of the movie and how it should be filmed. Students determined how they will help with filming or acting. Additionally, students will also edit the captured videos to create a true work of art. New students are always welcome.
With promising writers such as Elliot Mark and Jack Halfpenny – and his vision for a horror movie – and editors like George Otteson the festival and the club as a whole will be back on their feet in no time.
