Fifty years ago, the Supreme Court case Roe v. Wade passed the law on a 7-2 vote officially legalizing women’s right to choose to undergo an abortion. Since then, controversy has been widespread throughout American political culture on whether it is right to be “pro-life” or “pro-choice.” One year later, to the day after Roe v. Wade’s decision was made, a group of Pro-Life supporters started an annual tradition called the March for Life. This peaceful protest takes place yearly in Washington D.C. and in other key cities around the country.
In June of 2022, Roe v. Wade was overturned by the Supreme Court meaning that women’s rights to abortion were taken away. Despite this fact, the March for Life has continued. As of 2023, fourteen states have officially banned the practice of abortion with no exceptions. The continuation of the March for Life seeks to encourage this change nationwide.
Friday, January 19 was the fiftieth anniversary of the March for Life. Thousands of protesters gathered despite the weather and voiced their opinions on abortion. They are fighting for all life, from conception to natural death, and everything in between. The March for Life Foundation states that their goal in marching is not only to change the laws of abortion but also to change the hearts and minds of the people in America and ultimately make abortion unthinkable. The March for Life foundation says they will continue to march until a culture of life is restored to America, and urges people everywhere to support their cause.
