As we all know, for every Saint Joe student, there needs to be a completion of 20 hours of service per year. This means we all need 5 total hours of service logged on Mobile Serve by the end of each quarter in the school year. Need some ideas for service? Then you’re in the right place.
If you have no idea on what you can do for service then go onto the Mobile Serve website. Once you are on the homepage click the opportunities section on the left and then click invitations. Any of the options listed under invitations are all opportunities for service. Now just because a date or two is older doesn’t mean that you can’t still serve at the given place. Remember: If it is listed, service is needed. All you have to do is pick one place, that’s it. Once you pick a place, just make contact with Deacon Oross to figure out the process of volunteering at the place of your choice and once that’s figured out just consistently do service at said place. When you think about it the process is not hard at all, because once you’ve gone consistently you will have built a relationship with it and volunteering won’t feel like some dreadful thing, but something fun.
Some things you could do that are available on Mobile Serve would be helping younger kids with homework or monitoring them at after school care, volunteering at almost anytime of the week at Healthwin Nursing Home, making/serving breakfast with Our Lady of the Road on the weekends, and that’s just the tip of the iceberg! As you can see there is plenty of service to be done in plenty of places, so don’t just look for a one and done opportunity, make it a habit of doing service.
Now here are some special messages from Deacon Oross. First, he wants those who did service in the summer/early fall and finished their hours for first and second quarter to remember to get back into the habit of continuing their service. Don’t let that third quarter deadline catch up to you! Now for all sophomores specifically: DO YOUR SBL REQUIREMENTS!!! These are apart of the graduation requirements so even if the service isn’t done on time, still get it done and do the reflection on it. Deacon Oross also recommends that the sophomores who already have all 20 hours completed to complete all the SBL requirements on canvas so those don’t weigh on your shoulders at the end of the quarter along with other school work. And one final reminder: log log log your service, don’t just complete it.
