Throughout the 2023 to 2024 season, the cheerleading team has undergone multiple changes in the program compared to last year – ranging from getting a new coach to new uniforms. Throughout the season the underclassmen chose who they deemed fit to be a leader on the team. When being tasked to write a short speech on why one should be captain, many girls included leadership qualities such as being fearless, outspoken, and kind to everyone. But in the end, three girls were chosen as captains, those being Emilee Hahn, Janiyah Walton, and Sophia Claypool.
They were selected for being examples of what a cheerleader should be and for never showing fear. The captains showcased confidence in who they are and never shying away from representing Saint Joe school spirit.
One captain wrote, “A good leader to me is someone confident and fair while also being someone people can turn to in a time of need.”
Overall portraying the message of being able to take charge and be down to earth all in one. Moreover, the captains of the cheerleading team have crucial roles in the team’s overall structure. Captains keeping the team engaged and pushing them to achieve their goals and even certain abilities one did not think was possible. Constantly striving for improvement and generating energy, they also create a safe environment for those to grow and blossom from.
In addition, the experience that these captains have gained from this season will follow them through the rest of their lives and the course they choose to take. Being a captain not only is instituted during the season but also guides one off the field in making decisions.
