A few weeks ago, I found myself tired of what I was watching. I finally got to season 7 of Gilmore Girls, but became bored of Rory and Lorelai’s turbulent love lives and I didn’t have a new season of any of my other shows, such as The Summer I Turned Pretty, Never Have I Ever, or Outerbanks, to enjoy. Eventually, I found myself on Hulu and magically came across Superstore; a sitcom of six seasons that ran from 2015-2021, starring Barbie’s America Ferrera. It was great.
Taking place in a superstore by the name of Cloud 9, the show follows a unique group of employees in their daily happenings at work. There’s Amy, a longtime employee in a struggling marriage with her high school sweetheart Adam; Cheyenne, the sweet teen mom dating wannabe bad-boy Bo; blunt, stingy, no-nonsense Dina; new hires Mateo and Jonah, and whole bunch of other incredibly unique, interesting characters with strong personalities. The show is easy to binge, with its 22 minute episodes, witty humor, and the unique, familial relationships that each of the characters exhibit with each other. The show does remind me of The Office, with its strange characters and workplace setting, so if you are a fan of that, then this would be a good show for you. Although, I would argue that The Office is definitely funnier overall, Superstore does have its moments. The show features normal sitcom plots, such as a long-awaited, slow burn of enemies to friends to lovers trope, many episodes with miscommunication that spirals into disaster, and the resolution of a problem by the end of each episode.
Overall, I have really enjoyed this show and I think it would be a great watch if you are looking for something light and easy to view.
