The track and field team has kept busy since the beginning of the season in mid-February. Currently, the team is trying to qualify members for a chance at the indoor State Finals on March 23 in Indianapolis, but the work does not end there.
The structure of the Indoor State series is different from the outdoor State series, since the Indoor State finals is hosted by the Indiana Association of Track and Cross Country Coaches (IATCCC) instead of through the actual IHSAA.
This means qualifying for the big meet in Indianapolis is different as well. Beginning with the weekend of March 2 until March 23, the top 24 competitors in each indoor event qualify to participate in the Indoor State meet. Currently, our Saint Joe Track team has 7 events in the top 50, with 3 events making the top 24 (Luke Kaufhold- 60 hurdles, Brady Farrell- Pole Vault, TJ McBride- High Jump).
The team has competed the past 2 weekends at Trine and at Purdue, showcasing talent across running events, field events, and relays. The huskies plan to travel to Trine on Friday, March 15, for a final chance to rank up in promising events in hopes of bringing a good number of athletes to the Indoor State meet. However, this is just an early icing-on-the-cake scenario, since the majority of the season is yet to come.
Outdoor season kicks off on March 20th for the girls, and after Spring Break for the boys. Most athletes enjoy outdoor season more because of the warmer weather and the better performances, as well as the happy environment as the school year comes to a close.
With a promising start to the season, many more exciting updates will be on the way.
