With another successful Saint Joseph hockey season in the books, the final chapter on the season finally closed with the end of the season banquet. Head Coach Chris Kleva was very proud of the team this year saying, “The season didn’t end exactly the way we wanted it, regardless it was still a successful season.” Some of the teams highlights were beating Penn a whopping four times, and winning the Michiana High School Hockey League Regular Season Title.
During the banquet, team voted awards were revealed to the team. First however, the Junior Varsity squad was congratulated on a amazing season where they were able to get into the 1 A state tournament. Some players given special shout outs were Jack Keegan and Ben Fisher on the offensive side, Nik Gerard on the defensive side, and Beckham Rhame with a amazing season in net.
After the junior Varsity season was recapped the awards were given out to the varsity players. The Rookie of the Year award went to freshman Wyatt Amm. Amm was solid in goal for the squad this year and handled a lot of pressure as a rookie in net. Despite only being a freshman, Amm was able to hold the team in games and helped the team out a lot at the goalie position. The most improved player award went to sophomore Jackson Troester. Troester took a big step this year in being a anchor for the defensive side of the puck. The Hobey Baker Character Award went to senior Anthony Tirotta for battling through injuries all season. The Alex Kobek Attitude Award went to senior Annabelle Ahlersmeyer for always having a great attitude on and off the ice.
The final three awards went to junior Owen Balint for defensive player of the year, junior Evan Peters for offensive player of the year, and sophomore Colten Edmon for MVP. Edman had a terrific season on offense. Coach Kleva said he was said the year was over, but with only two varsity seniors graduating he is very excited for what the program has in store for the next couple of years.
