Over this past weekend the baseball team went to Lafayette to play in the Catholic Classic. This is the 3rd time that they have been invited to play in the tournament and it is hosted by one of the teams — Lafayette Central Catholic. There are 3 other teams in the tournament and everyone plays each other and the team with the best record comes out on top.
The team started off with a late 8PM game on Friday where they would face tough opponent in Guerin Catholic who is ranked 4th in the state. The Huskies got off to a hot start and ended up winning big 10-0 with a walk-off mercy rule grand slam by Jayce Lee.
After a big win they had another big challenge the next morning playing the host of the tournament Lafayette Central (ranked #1 in 1A). It was a close game with the score being 4-2 going into the bottom of the 6th and the errors and walks stacked on top each other and the Huskies gave up 8 losing 12-2.
After that hard loss they remain 0-3 against Lafayette Central since joining the tournament and with the win against Guerin they are 1-2 against them. Usually Bishop Noll is the other team that joins the tournament but this year it is Highland who has a average record but don’t let that fool you. They have had an incredibly hard schedule and beat Lafayette in their first game of the tournament.
With one game left the boys have felt the highest of highs and the lowest of lows and just wanted to end on a good note after a tough loss. They only had Highland to play. A battle for most of the game until the bats came around in the 7th putting Saint Joe up five and winning 7-0 with a complete game shutout.
The Saint Joe Huskies ended up having the best record due to head to head wins thereby winning the whole tournament and receiving a trophy. This is the first time that the team has won the tournament since joining in 2022.
Notable performances: Jaycee Lee, Franco Biffle, Brody Zelinski (MVP of tournament) and Jacob Snyder.
The team plays Monday at home against Bremen.
