I recently started watching the Netflix series Peaky Blinders, created by Steven Knight, and I’m going to be honest – I had modest expectations. Once I finished that first episode, however, I was completely immersed. The story, the acting, the cinematography, it all felt so unique and different compared to recent films and TV shows I have recently watched. Although the story is fictional, the setting still reflects the real world, and this interpretation of England after the Great War was, in my opinion, spot on.
The depth of each character was impactful and even small characters made the film more emotionally touching, especially, Cillian Murphy’s exceptional portrayal of Thomas Shelby, the protagonist of the show. Thomas Shelby is one of the most well written and intimidating characters to ever be created. The shots of Shelby staring blanking into the camera makes it seem as if Thomas can see into your soul, see who you are. Not only does Thomas have this effect on the audience but also the characters in the show as well, both companions of his and enemies alike.
