At the start of lacrosse season all the way back in February the team knew the season was going to be a challenge. After the majority of the team graduated last year the remaining squad knew there were roles to fill. The team had one returning starting player, and the roster was filled up by first year varsity players. The team was lead by captains Jack Helm, Matt Hall, Riley Gerard, and Mason Kazmierzak. Players that had breakout years for the varsity squad were Austin Ratigan and Freddy Helman at attack, Jack Keegan and Evan Balint at offensive midfield, Ryan Ruszkowski and Eli Young at defensive midfield, Nik Gerard and Mason Kazmierzak at close defense, and Matthew Hall with a great season at goalie.
Although the young team finished with a 3-15 record, the team feels as if this does not reflect their true talent. Senior captain Jack Helm said that the team struggled early on because of the inexperience and for the lack of chemistry. However, as the season went on the team began building chemistry and gaining experience. The highlight of the year was beating the Marian team by double digits in the Holy War.
The record of the team is not what the team wanted or expected, however they believe the future for the program is bright. With only three seniors graduating, Matt Hall, Jack Helm, and Gabe Machiela, the team looks to return most of their varsity roster next year and build off of this year. Now with more experience, more chemistry, and a harder work ethic, the team’s future is looking bright.
