Labor Day is the day most students are excited to have off but do not know the true meaning behind its importance. Labor Day is celebrated on the first Monday of every September. It started in 1894 and was signed off by President Grover Cleveland. This holiday celebrates the work Americans have put in to make our country what it is today. Most Jobs give work off and often lead into a three-day weekend. Labor Day will remain to be a holiday celebrated for the rest of time.
Labor Day started due to strikes made by labor unions due to the severe working conditions they had faced in the factories. The Industrial Revolution led to the coming of strikes within the labor unions. The Industrial Revolution was around 10o years before Labor Day was signed off. Names like Peter McGuire and Mathew McGuire were key figures in leading to the birth of Labor Day. These two men organized the importance of Labor Day and introduced it to the President which then came through to the public. Samuel Gomper is another important figure of the creation. Samuel was a founding leader of the AFL, American Federation of Labor, which served as a representation of the importance of Labor Day.
The reason Labor Day is on a Monday is simply because it gives workers a three-day weekend. Originally, it was celebrated on Tuesday, September 5th but was moved to Monday for the reason above. Similar ideas consist of Workers Day which is on May 1 so moving it to September also helped with the distinction between the two. Labor Day is a day off, so enjoy the three-day weekend.
