If you didn’t know our school Saint Joseph has a long tradition. St Joseph High school first started on September 20, 1953 at as the first consolidated, co-institutional Catholic high school in the South Bend area. The High school was constructed under the leadership of Bishop John Francis Noll along with Monsignor John Sabo who was the chairman of the building committee. This new school, Saint Joseph would have a big impact on all of South Bend and all of the schools around it. For the first fifteen years from 1953 to 1968 there were separate wings for boys and girls at the school. In 1968 the school became coeducational. The Brothers and Sisters of Holy Cross served as the main faculty of the school during the 70s – many in residence at the south convent and the north rectory.
Glenn Rousey became the first lay principal of the school, following the administration of Brother Francis Rotsaert, C.S.C. Nonetheless, diocesan priests continue to serve as school chaplains and some as teachers including the legendary Father Bly. There was an fundraiser for the money to move from the aging building that they were currently in. This Fundraiser started in 2010 and was accomplished mid 2011. This enabled the move from the previous location on 933 across from Notre Dame to the site of the old Saint Joseph Hospital building. In 2012 St Joseph officially moved to the new building to start an new era.
