Do you know the history of Redbull? Who created it and why? How did it become so revolutionary? Or what is the winter Red Bull flavor? Let’s dive in…
Red Bull’s story begins in Thailand in 1976, when Krating Daeng—a non-carbonated energy drink formulated to help Thai truck drivers and laborers stay awake—was created by entrepreneur Chaleo Yoovidhya. “Krating Daeng” loosely translates to Red Bull in English. The drink contained caffeine, taurine, B vitamins, and sugar and quickly became popular among Thailand’s working class.
Austrian businessman Dietrich Mateschitz discovered Krating Daeng while on a business trip to Thailand. Mateschitz found it was very effective in eliminating his jet lag, and decided to reach out to form a partnership with Yoovidhya. And so they did.
Mateschitz and Yoovidhya decided to rework the drink’s formula and brand it for a Western audience. They carbonated the beverage, slightly altered the taste, and advertised with a unique approach. Red Bull was officially launched in Austria in 1987, marking the introduction of a new beverage category: the “energy drink.” Their branding appeared to be aimed towards younger audiences, as they would use marketing sites such as extreme sports events, night clubs, and universities. The slogan “Red Bull gives you wings” became iconic, capturing the imagination of those seeking stimulation, energy, and performance enhancement.
Red Bull expanded rapidly and eventually reached the United States. The company continued its marketing approach, sponsoring sports events such as cliff diving, snowboarding, mountain biking, and Formula 1 racing.
