Senior Owen Balint is the definition of Student Athlete – playing 3 sports and excelling in the classroom with a GPA over 4.0. Balint plays Football, Ice Hockey, and Baseball. He is a middle linebacker for Football, a defensemen for Hockey, and a catcher for Baseball. He enjoys playing as catcher in baseball the most because he’s played that position since he was 8 years old.
His favorite baseball memory was beating Penn in extra innings while having the game tying and go ahead RBIs in the game. His favorite hockey memory was his overtime winner, going bar down against the Blades his junior year. His favorite football memory was just recently with them shutting out New Prairie 7-0. This was the first time New Prairie has been shut out since 2011, and the first time St.Joe has beaten them since 2016.
He adds “Nothing is better than winning on a Friday night,” and notes that “Good preparation leads to good success.” He makes this point not just sports, but school as well. When you study and prepare for your homework and tests, it will reflect your grades. Just like your preparation in practice leads to success in the games.
He maintains his astounding grade point average by getting his assignments turned in on time and studying daily, as well as going to teachers for help when needed. He uses his time wisely in flex to get as much work done as possible, so he has time to focus on his athletics. His advice to other/younger student athletes is to “Believe in yourself no matter what you do, and always remember that you’re a student-athlete, student always comes first.”
He plans on going to the University of Notre Dame, Indiana University, or the University of Michigan.
