Artificial intelligence has always been a hot topic. The fear of robots taking over society, the job market crashing, loss of control over our lives–you name it. ChatGPT has taken over seemingly overnight. An AI intelligence that gives human-like responses to everyday problems, and it’s used by over 200 million people; we must be doomed.
ChatGPT was launched on November 30, 2022. Its primary function is to mimic a human. Not only does it respond to typical questions, but it can also debug computer programs, compose music, create student essays, and answer test questions. ChatGPT is also constantly evolving—updates of the program are continuously made, tweaking the reliability of its responses.
Will ChatGPT be the death of us? Will it take over the job market? Will humans become even more lazy? No, no, and probably.
First off, ChatGPT can’t be the death of us because all it does is simply emulate humans. It uses the information we have provided on the internet and forms new patterns based on it. ChatGPT doesn’t create anything original. Yes, AI is great at math; that’s how it makes quick and thorough patterns, but human intelligence is far more complex. AI won’t take over the job market. Instead, it has and will continue to aid humans. ChatGPT isn’t independent; a better way to describe it is as an assistant. AI will reshape the job market, but that’s because as it advances, it will be more integrated into society.
Science fiction has always depicted AI as a terrorizing source that will end humanity, but realistically, that’s not the case. With ChatGPT growing in popularity by the day, it has become a tool that has stormed the classroom and workplace. It would be safe to say students rely too heavily on ChatGPT, but its clear-cut answers are simply mesmerizing. Humans will always be inclined to make a task easier; after all, the laziest of people revolutionize how we perceive the world.
