In today’s busy school environment, it can be hard to study for long periods without stopping. However, taking regular study breaks is very important for improving your focus and memory.
My own personal experience shows that the student brain can only concentrate well for about twenty-five to fifty minutes at a time. After that, students tend start to feel tired and the ability to remember things deteriorates. Taking short breaks—about five to ten minutes after studying—allows our brains to rest and recharge, making it easier to remember what we learned, which definitely helps if studying for a test.
Breaks also help reduce stress and anxiety. Doing something active during a break, like taking a short walk, stretching or even laying down on a couch, can boost your mood and help you feel better. This is really helpful during tough study sessions, as it can prevent feeling overwhelmed and stressed.
For short term studying like preparing for a quiz or lower importance test, 25 minutes followed by a 5-minute break is the best way to go. When you are doing a lot more studying, like preparing for a final, or some other important test, 40 minutes of studying, then a 20 break (or power nap) really allows you to get through everything in a relatively quick and painless way. This method not only keeps your energy up but also helps you balance study time and rest.
In conclusion, taking study breaks is essential for effective learning. By making time for short breaks, you can improve your focus, lower stress, and perform better in school. So, the next time you study, remember that taking a break can be your best ally.
