Social-Ecological Concerns Organization and Christian Relief Service is one of the fastest-growing clubs here at Saint Joe, with over 25 newly added members this semester. So, what is SECO/CRS? SECO/CRS holds fundraisers and provides volunteering opportunities to anyone at Saint Joe. Whether it’s unity gardens, park cleanups, or just spending a Tuesday morning meeting to help set up a fundraiser, all these events count for Christian service.
What kind of fundraisers? The Boo Gram fundraiser is right around the corner, where members sell chocolates, and anyone who purchases one can write a note anonymously or with their name to anyone at the school–yes, even teachers.
What does selling have to do with social-ecological concerns or Christian relief? That’s where the type of chocolate comes into play. SECO/CRS sells fair-trade chocolate that derives from no child labor or forced labor, uses environmentally sustainable farming practices, and has fair prices–farmers pay a fair price for their crops, which helps their financial situation, whatever that may be. This is just one of many fundraisers SECO/CRS holds. Whether it’s the Hunger Bowl, Rice Bowl, or setting up shop, selling more ethically-made treats during Christmas, SECO/CRS aims to better the community here at Saint Joe.
So, how can you, as a student, help SECO/CRS? Participate in these fundraisers. Buy a Boo Gram this late October; you will see the stand right outside of the cafeteria during every lunch. Or, even better, join a meeting. We have meetings at least once a month, typically on Tuesday mornings, where donuts and drinks are served. If you want specific meeting times or more information about SECO/CRS, email [email protected].
