Trick-or-treating is every kid’s (and teen’s) favorite time of the year where you dress up in a fun costume and get lots of free candy! But there are a lot of dangers when it comes to getting candy from strangers. So here are some dos and don’ts when it comes to trick or treating;
DO:
Pay attention to your surroundings: Know where you are at all times. Memorize the street names and remember where you came from and where you have been. Make sure you keep the group that you came with together. If you happen to be separated, try to keep in contact so you can find them again. Also, stay alert with cars coming and going if you are trick or treating in busy neighborhoods.
Pay attention to costume safety: Make sure your costume is comfortable enough for you to wear while walking for a long period of time. As well as wearing comfortable walking shoes so your feet don’t get tired too quickly. Have a sweater or wear something warm while trick or treating, the weather during this time can get a little chilly especially at night so make sure you are wrapped up.
DONT:
Accept homemade food: I understand people want to make baked goods or homemade candy to give out for halloween but it is unsafe to accept something that is made from strangers. You never know what could be in the homemade good, so don’t risk it.
Lose sight of who you are with: If you are going trick or treating with your young siblings or people who are way younger than you, make sure they are secure with a trusted teen or adult. If you can reach them and they are responsible, they can be alone with their friends. But make sure you know where they are and they are safe.
Overall, have a happy Halloween and stay safe trick or treating!
