Ever have the feeling you are being watched or the hairs on your neck stand up? This could be explained from the rich history of South Bend’s harbor tales. There are many haunted places known in this area, but the most well known location is Tippecanoe Place Restaurant.
The restaurant was built by Clem Studebaker in 1886-1889 and owned by the Studebaker family. There have been many customers and staff to have claimed they have witnessed unexplainable activity in the place. People have claimed to hear footsteps when no one else is there, eerie voices, and unexpected temperature drops. A staff member even claims that when he was all alone in the restaurant and was beginning to stack the chairs on the tables, he suddenly went to use the bathroom, and when he walked back out all the chairs were stacked on the tables. It is rumored that the ghosts are in fact the deceased family of the Studebakers.
Another well known site is the Oliver Mansion. The Oliver Mansion was built back in the 1800s and was previously owned by J.D. Oliver family before becoming a historical landmark. The mansion has 38 rooms and has surrounding 2.5 acres of beautiful gardens. Many people have taken tours of the mansion and have claimed to hear voices and sudden chills in certain rooms.
Lastly, another popular place people tend to visit for a paranormal experience is Primrose Road. According to local legend, if you turn off your headlights on this road and drive slowly; you will hear voices telling you to turn back or unclear whispers, or a phantom farm house might appear out of nowhere. It is rumored that if you drive exactly 20 miles an hour, your tires will go flat and if you drive exactly 30 miles an hour your car will die.
All of these locations are opened to the public and are ready to be explored; if you’re brave enough to.
