Over 100,000 people have died from drug overdoses in 2023. Fentanyl is a powerful opioid that’s used to treat severe pain. It is significantly more powerful than morphine, around 50 to 100 times stronger–increasing the risk of overdose and death.
That’s where SADD Club comes in. Students Against Destructive Decisions is a nationwide club that focuses on the prevention of drug use, underage drinking, and bullying. That’s why, here at Saint Joe, SADD is promoting awareness for Fentanyl abuse. Videos, merchandise, and posters are just the start; SADD club aims to spread awareness for one of the most dangerous epidemics for teens.
In addition to SADD’s promotion for the cause, here are some steps you can take to ensure the safety of others. First off, if you are having issues, reach out. Talk to our counselors here at Saint Joe or notify a loved one. If you find someone else in this situation, educate them. Notify a teacher or adult, support them, and teach them the dangers of fentanyl. Be there for them.
If you ever get into a situation where you see an overdose, you must have Narcan. Walgreens or your local pharmacy sells Narcan, an opioid overdose reversal medication that can be given as a nasal spray or injection. Narcan saves lives.
Although the national rate for overdoses has dipped, it’s still prevalent more than ever. Dosages as small as 2 milligrams can be fatal. Students must stay vigilant. High school is just the start; as college rolls around, exposure to drugs will become more common. Educate others and stay safe, Saint Joe.
