After a very successful season last year going to state, the St. Joe boys basketball team is ready to run it back and win state this year.
Last year, the team had an incredible run. After initially struggling a little bit mid-way throughout the season, the boys turned it on and went on an incredible run. First, Saint Joe routed both Marian and Clay en route to their sectional title, then beat John Glenn to win Regionals, Peru and Delta in two thrilling games to win Semi-state, but the run finally came to an end in the state finals against Scottsburg.
With very high expectations coming into the season, the team is ready to do even better this year. The team lost four impactful seniors in Jayce Lee, Jerry Barca, Tyler Brown, and Brady Mansfield, but outside of that, the team has spent the whole summer and fall refining their skills and building continuity to have a chance to cement their legacy in St. Joe’s history.
The team is led by senior captains Chase Konieczny and Brashaun Woods. With their veteran leadership as well as a great leader in Coach Gaff, the younger players on the team are able to learn a lot and grow into very good players as well as live up to the expectations set by last year’s team.
Coach Gaff likes to talk about the standard that is being set at St. Joe. He says that every little detail must be done right and paid attention to in order to go where the team wants to go. Coach Gaff says that every person on the team must hold everyone else accountable in order to be even more successful than last year.
Let’s wish the team good luck this year!
