Led by Coach McCarthy, the boys and girls cross country teams competed in regionals this past weekend with the hopes of going to state. With a field of over twenty five teams and over 250 runners, the Saint Joe cross country teams were up against the premier runners in the state of Indiana.
On the girls side, the team finished 11th and fell short of qualifying for state. However, they had a very strong season, winning over 100 head to head races against other schools and five different team championships on the season including the City Meet, the Northwood Invitational, and the New Prairie Kickoff Classic. They only lost one race against a school of similar size to Saint Joe.
Although the team did not advance to the state championship, junior Izzy Frabutt placed 17th out of more than 250 runners to personally advance to state. This will be her first trip to state out of her three years on the cross country squad. When I asked her about her goals going into regionals, she said, “I want to make it to state.” Thankfully, she was able to accomplish her goal and now she prepares to compete in the state finals at 12pm this Saturday at Indiana State University.
The boys team placed 20th to unfortunately end their season as well, but the future is looking bright. The team mostly consists of underclassmen with strong leadership from Gonzalo Serrano and Colin Zwiller as they look to build upon this year’s growth to be even more successful next year.
