Ever wondered why the day after Thanksgiving is called Black Friday?
Black Friday is a day where most people start getting in the Christmas spirit with sweet deals. The history of Black Friday has evolved since it was first used and has evolved over time to what it is now.
The term “Black Friday” was first used in the 1950s by police in Philadelphia to describe the chaotic day after Thanksgiving when suburban shoppers and tourists flooded into the city ahead of the big Army-Navy football game held on that Saturday every year. The massive crowds created traffic jams and caused shoplifting to increase, leading the police to coin the term “Black Friday.” (Pruitt)
In the 1980s, businesses discovered a new way to reinvent the so-called “Black Friday,” changing it to something more positive. They came up with the idea when they discovered that the day after Thanksgiving was the turning point in many businesses. It was the day where their low profit transitioned to making a high profit due to the holiday season. This idea is what created Black Friday into a day of sales and encouraging customers to start shopping for the holidays. To this day Black Friday is celebrated Worldwide.
