November 5th was arguably the most important day of 2024: election day. Vice President Kamala Harris and Former President Trump ran head-to-head, representing the Democratic and Republican parties, respectively.
Whether it was Meghan Thee Stallion performing at Harris’s Atlanta Rally or comedian Tony Hinchcliffe calling Puerto Rico a “floating island of garbage,” a lot, to say the least, happened.
In case you didn’t know, President Trump is the president. The polls have been finalized, and the electoral college came to 312-226, with 270 votes needed to win the race. So what happened? Plenty, but here are some key takeaways:
- Republicans were set up for success. Despite economic improvements, Americans have continuously paid higher than pre-pandemic prices. On top of that, the Federal Reserve’s inflation fix has caused a lack of affordable housing. Interest rates have started to cut, but not in time for Americans to reap the benefits; perfect timing for the Republican Party to take advantage.
- White voters increased their share of the electorate from 67% to 71%. Even though the white population sector decreases every year, it’s remarkable that they went up for this election due to a high turnout.
- Trump made history by winning over 46% of Latinos–a feat no Republican has accomplished. However, Harris did win 60% of Latinas, but her gain wasn’t enough to offset Trump’s surprising pull.
Republicans have also won the House of Representatives and the Senate–congress. So I guess you could say the polls have spoken, and now all we can do is wait and see what the 47th president of the United States has in store.
