On Monday, January 20, the Notre Dame Fighting Irish ended the college football season by facing of against the Ohio State Buckeyes in the college football national championship. Unfortunately, as you almost certainly know, Notre Dame did not emerge victorious. If you did not watch the game and want to know more about how it went, here’s a summary:
Notre Dame’s first drive seemed promising, ending in a touchdown. However, the drive was absurdly long and used mostly running plays, which meant the Notre Dame quarterback was exhausted by the end of the first quarter.
Because of this, the Ohio State defense was able to prevent Notre Dame from scoring any more points in the first half. Ohio State’s offense, on the other hand, quickly overtook Notre Dame’s score of 7, ending the first half with a score of 21-7.
The second half didn’t go much better for Notre Dame than the first. Ohio State scored within the first few minutes of the third quarter, followed by another unsuccessful drive by Notre Dame. Things started to look up near the end of the third quarter, with Notre Dame scoring a touchdown and successfully going for two while managing to hold Ohio state to only a field goal.
Notre Dame even recovered an Ohio State fumble at the beginning of the fourth quarter. However, Notre Dame then missed a field goal, leaving them with too little time left on the clock to catch up with Ohio State.
The game’s final score was 34-23, Ohio State, making the Buckeyes the National Champions and ending Notre Dame’s historic run.
