Over Christmas break, I went to go see the new movie Nosferatu released on December 25, 2024 by Robert Eggers, who also recently directed The Lighthouse in 2019. This movie definitely fit his M.O. I thought it had a good plot, with great acting and solid camera work. Despite being absurdly uncomfortable to watch for some scenes, it was actually pretty good. I thought Bill Skarsgård played the vampire Nosferatu excellently. He was creepy, unsettling, uncomfortable, and I was all for it.
While I do believe this movie was really good, I really should have done my research on this movie because it was not what I expected going into it. I thought this was going to be a big jump scare movie, with lots of gore and crazy death scenes. It was far from that and if I actually looked up who was directing it, I probably would have had different expectations. The thing I felt was the most uncomfortable was the way they had Nosferatu look. They were going for a Vlad the Impaler look by giving him a mustache and a greasy comb over. I personally wasn’t a fan of this mainly because it just made it hard to look at him without getting creeped out but that’s Eggers was going for, I believe.
Overall I thought this movie was good. I believe it is a solid 8/10 and would definitely recommend it to be watched. Maybe not in theaters unless you like things that make you curl your toes and cringe from creepiness but definitely when it’s released on streaming platforms.
