It’s Spooky Season! What Was Your Favorite Halloween Story Growing Up?

Sarah Hiestand, staff writer

Everyone has their favorite Halloween movie, but what about those halloween stories we grew up on as kids? I asked around the school about everyone’s favorite spooky tale and received nostalgia-filled answers. Remember “The Little Old Lady Who Was Not Afraid of Anything”, “Goosebumps”, or “It’s The Great Pumpkin Charlie Brown”? So many forgotten classics that bring you back to the good ole days. My all time favorite was “The Little Old Lady Who Was Not Afraid of Anything.”

This story was something I heard growing up every year Halloween came around. It is about a little old lady walking through the woods looking for herbs and spices. She was followed by shoes, pants, a shirt, a hat, gloves, and finally a pumpkin. Each clothing item made a noise when they started following the lady, and every time she would turn around and see it but respond “ I am not afraid of you!” All six things followed her home and the next morning made up a scarecrow in her yard.

The story is simple, but one I loved hearing growing up. The lady was never afraid and it showed me at a young age to be brave. I always admired how she just kept walking and going along with her day despite all these things following her. She didn’t let them see her fear which ultimately saved her. Although short, and mainly for young kids, I now look back on this story and recognize valuable lessons I learned.

As Halloween comes around, you may have younger siblings yearning for a story time. I highly recommend this short story I grew up on!
