On January 27, 2025, a tragic shooting occurred at Martin’s Super Market in Elkhart, Indiana, resulting in the deaths of two individuals and injuries to two police officers. The assailant, identified as 54-year-old Juan M. Sanchez, entered the store and fatally shot 19-year-old employee Annasue Rocha and 49-year-old customer Benjamin Jeffery. Sanchez was subsequently shot and killed by police outside the store after wounding Corporal Paul Vandenburg and Patrolman Ethan Pasternak; Pasternak remains hospitalized in stable condition.

Authorities responded to a 911 call at approximately 5:30 p.m., discovering the two victims deceased inside the supermarket. Witnesses described a chaotic scene, with shoppers seeking cover upon hearing multiple gunshots. One witness recounted, “I heard multiple shots, and everyone started ducking for cover.”

The motive behind Sanchez’s actions remains under investigation. Elkhart Police Chief Dan Milanese emphasized the need for a thorough and objective investigation, stating, “Our community is in pain, and we owe it to the victims and their families to conduct a complete and impartial investigation.”

In the aftermath, Martin’s Super Market issued a statement expressing grief and extending condolences to the victims’ families. The company also affirmed its cooperation with law enforcement during the investigation.
