As a kid, “speedy” Sam was destined to become a leader in all that he does. Quiet, but assertive, Sam has always let his play do the talking and led his team by example. Sam started his soccer journey at the former Indiana Invaders Soccer Club where he captained many great teams to victories at Socctoberfest and other well-known tournaments. Small but mighty was the mindset that led Sam into his freshman soccer season at Saint Joe High, where he became a freshman starter on an experienced team. When Sam entered his first high school game against Goshen his freshman year, he started off with a bang. A beautiful shot to the top corner that would kick off an incredible high school soccer career. Sam’s internal toughness and drive helped him compete against those that were much bigger than him; Sam has always played bigger than he is. Sam continued to lead his team in his sophomore season with a team-high 15 assists, and becoming a well-known superstar in the NIC.
As Sam became an upperclassmen, he was selected as a captain by his teammates during his junior season, which was a great honor. Although the Saint Joe squad struggled during his junior season, Sam was still a 1st Team All NIC nominee and a member of the All-District Team; showcasing his perseverance and leadership during a frustrating season for the Huskies. As leader and captain, Sam continued to encourage his teammates through the difficult season and left many with optimistic mindsets for Sam’s senior season. Sam led workouts throughout the summer to improve the Huskies play in the upcoming season.
Sam’s senior season became one to remember as he constantly put the whole team above himself. As the Huskies had a gap at their left back position in the middle of the season, Sam took one for the team and dropped back from his forward position to stabilize the back line. Sam led the Huskies to a bounce back year for the program where they finally took down the Marian Knights and spoiled the Penn Kingsmen’s Senior Night. Harshman solidified his legacy as one of the most consistent Husky players in recent memory by once again earning 1st Team All-NIC and the All-District squad. Not to mention Sam’s constant hard work in the classroom, which will lead him to attending a top university next fall.
“Speedy” Sam will continue to lead in whatever comes next in his promising future.
