I recently saw Wolf Man, directed by Leigh Whannell and produced by Ryan Gosling and Jason Blum, in theaters and while I thought the movie was somewhat decent, the public opinion was not in the same boat as me. Adapted from the 1941 film The Wolf Man directed by George Waggner, this movie, in my opinion, had some good concepts in it. I thought the movie was shot well and included a lot of good overhead shots of the landscape, and for a horror movie I thought all the scenes shot during the day were very vibrant. Apart from that, I thought the camera work, in terms of P.O.V’s, was very neat. Alternating back and forth from one character’s perspective to another in one take but changing how the character conveys reality was very unique. Although there is more that I would’ve done with it, I thought what was given was acceptable.
The CGI and prosthetic makeup was pretty good for all the scenes where it was needed, especially the transformation scene but some of the sound effects and use of audio was not so good. Some sounds didn’t make sense and some weren’t even close to accurate. That and how the dad “lost himself” was the thing that made me the most displeased with this film.
Apart from the camera work and editing, the acting was pretty good. I thought the actors and actresses did a fair job of making the audience feel for the characters, for the most part. There were some scenes and bits of dialogue that felt were forced or just straight up unnecessary but I feel that’s bound to happen in the majority of films, especially nowadays so it can be looked past.
Overall I thought the movie was alright. While the public thinks it’s worse than alright, I disagree. I don’t think this movie was phenomenal, it had flaws, and a great many of them, but it wasn’t terrible. I would give this movie a 6.5/10, and this is at most what I would give it.
