Super Bowl LIX was yesterday, February 9. Let’s take a look at how both teams performed.
The Philadelphia Eagles were slow out of the gate, however they quickly shut down the Chief’s first drive and came back with a 7 play touchdown drive of their own. After suffering an interception, they came back in the second quarter with a field goal, then had an interception returned for a touchdown, and an additional interception followed by another touchdown. With Kansas City struggling to move the ball, that left the score 24-0 at the end of the half.
The Chiefs had won the coin toss and deferred to the second half, so they received the ball to start. Once again not able to move the ball, they punted to the Eagles; giving them a chance for a field goal. On the Chief’s next drive, a turnover was forced after a loss of downs, and the Eagles scored a touchdown with a 46-yard pass to D. Smith. This seemed to spark something in the Chiefs as the next drive they went 90 yards in 5 plays for a touchdown. Finishing out the game, the Eagles were able to score two more field goals and the Chiefs were able to score two more touchdowns. The final score was 40-22, Eagles. Jalen Hurts was named the MVP of the game.
Now on the statistics side, it’s surprising how well the Chiefs performed considering the final outcome. Patrick Mahomes passed for 257 yards with a 95.4 RAT, while Jalen Hurts had 221 passing yards and a 119.7 RAT. Hurts dominated the rushing yards game with 72 compared to Mahomes’s 25; however Xavier Worthy gave the chiefs 157 yards and 8 receptions with 2 touchdowns, while Devonta Smith had 69 yards, 4 receptions, and 1 touchdown.
Overall, the Eagles dominated in rushing yards, first downs, defensive interceptions and sacks, and time of possession. The key factor for them was Kansas City’s 2 interceptions, 1 fumble, 6 punts and lack of defensive sacks. The Eagles dominated the entire game up till the last quarter when they only put up 6 points compared to the Chief’s 16.
Although the game was a disappointment to any Chiefs fan hoping to see their team win 3 straight Super Bowls, Eagles fans were excited to see their team dominating in a rematch of Super Bowl LVII.
