Every year, students at Saint Joe have performed the Living Stations Passion Play. The script for this play was curated by Denny Charbonnet and adapted by Mrs. Baglow for Saint Joe. The play was mainly adapted to feature more female speaking roles as the play originally only had male speaking roles because it was written for an all-boys school. One of the main adaptations that came from this was the role of the narrator. Originally, the narrator was meant to be one of the Apostles. In the version performed at Saint Joe, the narrator is Pilate’s wife and read by a female student.
The roles in the Passion Play are mainly filled by senior students, but this year some sophomores and juniors will also be filling roles. Some of the main roles in the play are: Jesus, who is played by Julian Mendoza, Mary, who is played by Annalise Lake, the Narrator, who is played by Sophia Helfrich, Simon Peter, who is played by Luke Trinter, Pilate, who is played by Peter Baglow, and Judas, who is played by Jack Halfpenny.
While playing each of these roles, these, and other students will reenact the passion and death of Jesus. Act I begins with the Agony in the Garden and ends with the First Station of the Cross when Jesus is condemned to death. Act II follows the Stations of the Cross and ends with Jesus being laid in the tomb. Along with the acting, there will also be music throughout the play sung by the choir. Some of these songs include, “Christ Has No Body Now but Yours”, “Wood and Nails”, and “Lord, Have Mercy”. These songs along with others will be sung throughout the play to contribute to the reenactment.
There will be two performances of the play this year. The first performance will take place on Wednesday, April 16 at 7pm in the Main Gym. This performance will be open to the public. The second performance will take place on Thursday, April 17 at 10am in the Main Gym. This will be the performance for the school and will take place during flex period.
