Our boy’s basketball team has been back to back regional champs 2 years in a row, and now we’ve extended our winning streak as class 3A semi-state champions and hopefully state champions.
The first game played was the morning of March 22. Our boys faced Maconaquah and beat the semi-state record for most points with 115. They then faced East Chicago Central that same night and won 84-72. They scored a combined total of 199 points, which is the most ever in IHSAA two-game semi-state format.
In an interview with Coach Gaff in the South Bend Tribune, he said: “It’s awesome. Maybe tomorrow, I’ll have some better words. But right now, it’s just an amazing feeling.”
After St. Joe put up 76 points against East Chicago’s 59, the gap was tightened and East Chicago scored another 11 to make it an 8 point differential with only 1:37 to play. Brashaun Woods was able to draw a foul and end any attempt the Cardinals had to come back. After the game, the senior said “It’s just amazing; it was a great feeling. The crowd went crazy.”
The lead scorers were sophomore Elijah King with 48 points, Brashaun Woods with 37, Chase Konieczny with 35, Nick Shrewsberry with 33, Ethan Roseman with 17 and Braylen White with 14.
This upcoming weekend, the team will face the Indianapolis Crispus Attucks in the championship at 6pm on Saturday, March 29, at Gainbridge Fieldhouse in Indianapolis. We are coming in with a 26-3 record, while they are 22-6.
Our team’s success the last couple years means that we will have the opportunity to move up to class 4A in the 2025-26 season. It is an exciting opportunity for our Huskies, and the game is going to be packed! Show out with Husky spirit!
