The SJ softball teams are almost done with the conference season. Both have performed well, with Varsity picking up later in the season to attain a 7-9 record. The JV Huskies have a near-perfect record, with 7-1. There’s two more weeks left in the season, with the last conference game scheduled for May 24.
Some of the Junior Varsity’s most impressive wins were against New Prairie (12-0), Elkhart (14-2), Northridge (12-2), and Mishawaka (19-9). Coaches Alyssa Weinberg and Cassidy Swartz have helped to carry the team through the season.
Varsity has had many stellar performances. Some worthy of note were Marian (14-0) and LaPorte (15-0). This team has been led by long-time coach Earl Keith and assistant Rachel Solmos.
After the loss of standout senior Berkley Zache this season, the Huskies quickly recovered to fill the spots needed. However, there are seven current seniors on the team, not including two senior team managers. Hopefully there will be a rise in freshman next season to fill the gaps needed.
The 3A sectional draw gave the Huskies a strong upper hand for the first round, with their matchup being Mishawaka Marian. The Varsity team beat them by 14-0 and 11-2 in their two games against the rival school. If the Huskies bypass Marian in the first round, they will be up against the winner of John Glenn vs. Plymouth. The girls have not faced either of those teams yet, but all three teams have similar records. The matchup for sectional champs should be a good show.
