The hunger bowl is a competition between Saint Joe High School and Marian High School. It is when the two schools go head to head within the week of sports ending with the football holy war on that Friday. The two schools have one week to collect as much canned or perishable food as they can to donate to the Saint Vincent Depaul food bank. Then following that week on Friday both schools have a dress down day. Marian charges 5 dollars while Saint Joe charges one but suggests more.
Saint Joe beat Marian in the holy war match up on the fourth week of high school football 31-0. The Huskies moved on to be 4-0 for the first time since 2014. Unfortunately Marian did end up winning the food part of the competition. They raised 500 dollars more than Saint Joe did but had a smaller amount of food than Saint Joe. There was a bet made in this competition that the assistant principles made with each other. The bet was whatever school that lost has to wear the opponents spirit wear for every holy war game that they attend. This was for any sport played at the school, not just football.
Saint Joe lost so Mr. Luczynski has to wear Marian clothes at all the sporting events. Marian has not dropped off the merch yet though. Saint Joe has plans on how to beat Marian next year. They plan on doing a battle of the departments to see which subject raises the most food. They also plan on doing the same things that they did this year like reaching out to parents and planning ahead more. Freshman’s at Saint Joe raised the most pounds in food. They raised around 6500 pounds themselves while sophomores, juniors, and seniors raised around 6500 pounds together. Overall both schools raised 25,322 pounds of food together enough to feed nearly 3,000 of our neighbors in need.
