St. Joe Girl’s Swimming and Diving Stand Out at Sectionals!

Saleena Vu

It was a memorable day for the Saint Joe Girl’s Swimming and Diving team on February 6th as they competed at the IHSAA Girl’s Swimming and Diving Sectional meet at Riley High School. The entire team had qualified for the Sectional finals that Saturday after the Sectional prelims held the previous Thursday evening. The girl’s team consisting of ten swimmers and one diver placed second behind Penn with a team score of 382. The girls all had fantastic swims, breaking multiple records.

Mary Cate Pruitt broke two pool records with a time of 1:48.57 in her 200 Free and a time of 4:50.84 in the 500 free, qualifying for state in both events.

Emma Feltzer qualified for state and established a new pool, sectional, and school record in her 100 Free with a time of 50.98. Feltzer is also competing in the 200 Free with Mary Cate at state as well.

Lauren Pieniazkiewicz qualified for state in the 50 Free with a time of 23.79 and the 100 Breast with a time of 1:05.10. Jane Lloyd qualified for state with a 56.98 in the 100 Back.

The girls will be going to state for both of the freestyle relays as well. The 200 Free relay consisting of the four swimmers (Lloyd, Pieniazkiewicz, Feltzer, and Pruitt) set a new pool, sectional, and school record with a time of 1:34.90.

The same relay team set a new pool and sectional record for the 400 Free relay as well with a time of 3:27.90, almost breaking the 3:27.69 school record. Saleena Vu had a new personal best of 242.55 points for 1 meter diving.

Margaux Hannewyk and Cece Farrell will also be attending the state meet as alternates.

The girl’s team set the most records and will send the most swimmers to the state meet – more than any other team in the sectional. The team worked hard all season, and overcame all the challenges that came their way. Congratulations to the Lady Indians for all of their accomplishments this past season!
