Baseball Preview

It’s no secret that all spring sports lost their chance at a season last year but the boys baseball team is more excited than ever to get started this year. They have started their preseason workouts in preparation for their upcoming season.

Each and every player expressed the same sentiment, “Just excited to be able to play this year.”

Losing their season due to a pandemic is something that no high schoolers would ever have thought they would experience, but unfortunately for some of our athletes, it has become normal.

Seniors Gabe Yonto, Keegan Frick, Collin Suth and Matt Eck have all been playing baseball for most of their life and this is their last season in high school. After losing their Junior season, they are all hungry to get back on the field this spring. With big shoes to fill and a pre-season ranking of 3rd in the state, they are feeling the responsibility to live up to the tradition of success. This group intends to continue that legacy with the ultimate goal of making it to state, always motivating them.

This is Coach John Smolinski’s first year as head coach after being a dedicated Assistant Coach for eight years. Coach Smolinski has high expectations for this group of boys,  “With this group I really think we have a great chance of doing it.”

Just four years ago in 2017, the baseball team defeated Jasper 4-0 in the state final and the seniors hope to make it another state run this spring. Keep an eye out for our Boys Baseball team: come out and support the boys this season!
