Amazon is back at it!

On April 9, 2021, Amazon released a brand new original series. They came out with a show called Them, created by Little Marvin and executive producer Lena Waithe. The show is about an African American family moving from North Carolina to an all-white neighborhood in Los Angeles in the 1950s. As soon as they move there, there’s a lot of racial tension, and problems unfold. As if that isn’t enough, they’re individually going through personal problems that they’re struggling to overcome. While we’re watching the show, we wonder “Will they overcome their problems and stay?” “Will they give up and move back to North Carolina” or “Will they succumb into their fears and enemies?”

What about the movie U.S? 

When the show premiered, there was a lot of comparison to the movie that came out on March 22 in 2019. Both this show and the movie US are dubbed as black horror films where both families deal with some horrific supernatural danger and also have a mix of racist neighbors and segregation. While viewers view the show through comparison to the film Us, they are also comparing Them to the movie Get Out; certainly all three films have something in common.

Are these films bad for business? 

There has been some backlash on these films and twitter is saying it all. Some people are arguing that all black horror films are “centered around white people all the time” and that “directors, writers, and producers love to shop around black trauma for comments and sales.” Despite the chatter, people do love them and find the films very intriguing.
