As the air gets colder by the day, it seems like snow flakes are just about to start swooping down any day now. November means it is close to winter, and that means we can start looking forward to some activities that winter has to offer.

1. Ice Skating

Ice skating is a classic winter activity. In fact, I haven’t met a person who lives in the Midwest that has never ice skated. In Michiana, there are several places you can ice skate. Most notable for South Bend, the newly opened Howard Park Ice Skating Rink is a must do. With 16,000 square feet of ice and a built in ice track, ice skating at Howard Park will never get you bored! Other locations include Compton Family Ice Arena at Notre Dame, and if you live in Michigan, the John and Dede Howard Ice Arena located in Saint Joseph is also a prime location.

2. Broomball

Never heard of broomball? It isn’t that much of a talked winter game. But the name says it all. With a wooden or plastic “broom” you slap a ball around on ice and hope to make it into the net! A lot like hockey, but without the skates, this fun and exciting sport is good for all skill levels and athletes. Howard Park offers broomball regularly, and places like Compton Family Ice Arena has full sets as well! Just make sure to not slip and fall?

3. Skiing

Another classic winter sport, skiing tests your balance, agility, and bravery. Although there is only one ski hill in the area, Swiss Valley has a lot to offer. They have built in park features for those who want to show off their skills, and they also have a variety of ski runs for all skill levels. If you have not skied before, you’re in luck! Swiss Valley offers private lessons to those who want to learn. Also, our very own school has a ski club! Make sure to check in with Mr. Davidson at the iHelp desk for more information.

4. Sledding

For those who want the thrill of the slopes, but without balancing on two thin skis, sledding is the right choice for you! Many places around Michiana offer sledding. My personal favorite is 5 Pines Ministries’ sledding hill. Located just north of Niles, they shape their own sledding hill for maximum enjoyment. Saint Patrick’s Park also has their own sledding hill that is very accessible for all people. Ferrettie/Baugo Creek County Park also has their own sledding hill. Both of these locations offer their own sleds for you to use!

The start of November means the first bits of winter are arriving. Get your winter gear on and catch some snowflakes!
