Boys Track Sectional Meet Recap

Boys+Track+Sectional+Meet+Recap

Last night, May 19, 2022, the Saint Joe Boys’ track team competed in their IHSAA Sectional track meet. This meet took place at Penn High School, with many other teams competing at the meet as well. Many of our athletes will be advancing in the state series, with either a top 3 Sectional finish in their event or a with a time or mark that qualifies for a wildcard for the Regional track meet. Those moving on include Ollie Kaufhold in the 100 meter and 200 meter, Ian Joyce in the high jump, Luke Kaufhold in the 110 meter high hurdles and the 300 meter hurdles, the 4 by 400 meter relay, and the 4 by 100 meter relay, with a few others still waiting on potential wild card spots. The Regional track meet will be held at Goshen High School next Thursday, May 26.

Among all of the great finishes last night, the team finished for Saleem. They proudly bore shirts with this three word message on the front, remembering Saleem, who was a 300 meter hurdler. There was a moment of silence at the meet right before the national anthem, in which all athletes and fans present shared in silence, recognizing Saleem. He was also recognized during what would have been his 300 meter hurdle heat, with a few team members laying down his jersey and a flag down in his lane. The rest of the team kneeled together in solidarity right by the 300 meter hurdle start. Even after the meet, Coach McCarthy had some inspiring words for the team. He challenged them to do something everyday specifically to remember their former friend and teammate. Many athletes also courageously stood up in front of the team to share any thoughts they had. This was a night that was inspired by Saleem’s hard-working demeanor, and this will continue to inspire the team throughout the rest of the state series.
