Video Game Review: Wolfenstein, A New Order
August 15, 2023
The video game Wolfenstein was released by Id Software and Bethesda in 2014 and was a remake of a classic game from 2008. The game takes place for the majority of the time in the 1960s, but the opening mission was in 1945. The game follows Captain B.J. Blazkowits of the United States Military. The opening mission gives you the context for the game- during 1945, WWII is not going well for the Americans. Nazi Germany discovered new super weapons and power sources, functionally making them invincible. You are the lead command on a last-ditch mission that, if successful, will cripple the Third Reich. You are caught in an explosion, killing your team and putting you into a coma. You wake up 15 years later, in the ’60s. The Nazis have won, and you are one of the last remaining men who is willing to fight.
The game is fantastic, and the awards it won were justified. The game has two main strong suits. The first is gunplay. The shooting mechanics and overall combat in the game feel very gritty and very polished. You feel every gunshot you take, and every shot you fire has weight. Wolfenstein has a wide range of guns at your disposal, ensuring that the gunplay never feels boring or repetitive. The second is story. The story in Wolfenstein is captivating- the maps are interesting, the characters make you feel invested, and the mission has you feeling like you are in a war for justice. Nothing feels tedious but instead everything in the game Wolfenstein makes your actions feel worthwhile.
