Video Game Review: Doom (1993)

Doom 1993 was released by id Softwares in, unsurprisingly, 1993. This was one of the most revolutionary video games of all time, and one I’ve had the pleasure of playing recently. The story follows the Doom Marine- a member of the Military stationed on the UAC (Union Aerospace Corporation) base on Mars. The UAC is experimenting with inter-portal travel but accidentally opens up a portal to Hell, letting a swarm of Demons into the base. You are the lone survivor of the invasion, and take it upon yourself to fight off the hordes of demons and save yourself and all of Earth from their wrath.

The game is simply fantastic. Being that it was released in 1993 and was one of the first FPSs, there are some unique challenges. For one, if you die, rather than restarting at a load point with your inventory, you restart the entire level with only the pistol equipped. You can find other guns, like the shotgun, chaingun, plasma gun, etc, throughout the level, as well as ammo for the guns. Demons in this game hit hard and the simple mechanics leave no room for error- this game is all about precision and persistence.

It does have some weak points, however. The storyline is basically non-existent, mostly consisting of going from place to place to shoot demons. While this is fun, it can get boring after time- especially when compared to the complex and convoluted storylines of modern FPSs. Additionally, this has to be one of the hardest videogames I have ever played, and can get extremely frustrating very fast.

All this in mind, I give the game a very respectable 8.5/10- extremely fun, revolutionary, and an extremely rewarding game to win!
